A kind of census

We're starting into a year of change at Suite101, and to help ensure we're properly using our strengths (and are equally aware of our weaknesses), we're today launching a very simple, quaint little census.

Purely for Suite101 contributors, this survey of details and opinions will give us a better idea who you are. Practically, it will help insert you (and your interests) into our project.

Visit the census page here and tell us what you can. Should just take a minute, won't hurt a bit.

Just saw this and wanted to say thanks for putting it out there.

You're right, it didn't hurt a bit! :-)

By the way, this isn't showing up on the main Blog list (page), only as a link on the side under Latest Community Blog Posts.

Hey Malysa,

I have a question for you. You always seem to know the tech side of the site. I noticed yesterday that on one of my sections another topic editor had changed my intro. I am assuming it was this editor because 8 or 9 links were added and each one led to this editor's articles. Do you know if other editors can access our sites. I realize Editors can but I thought it strange an editor would put that many links to the same author. Thanks Brenda Gargus

Brenda- that's odd, have you asked the TE or the helpdesk about it? It may be a glitch of some sort..

Thanks Victoria, I will ask the help desk. I did delete the intro because whoever had done it put several links to one author. I will send an quick shout out to the help desk . Thanks.

A couple of issues.

What computer do you use?
on my desktop I have a MAC and a windows PC - the survey only let me choose one. I use both both for my Suite101 articles.

Politics :

I chose none, not because I am apolitical, but as a Political Science major and journalist I tend to view notions of partisan politics with a mixture of amusement at the infantile games of all sides, and horror as this seems to pass for discussion in the public sphere.

I completed the survey, Michael.

Michael,

Thanks for providing this forum! I hope you find the results useful.

Before filling this I'd like to see guarantees that no third party is going to have access to my data, either aggregated or individually. It feels like market research, and I don't like my data sold to any third party for market research.
Thanks.

I chose to not answer re household income and politics -- though I am certainly not apolitical. I don't understand why those questions are included in the survey.

Well, Michael, I finished mine. I don't understand what religion, politics, nationality and income have to do with whether or not a person is a good (excellent) writer). I am interested in how or whether this survey will be important to planning for Suite101.

Oh, dear. As a tri-OS household, that survey failed me :(

I kept trying to push Mac AND Windows AND Linux, but the form wouldn't let me.

I'm a sad Panda right now.

I completed the survey but I do wish to express my dislike of being so pigeonholed!

My income, political slant and religion have NAFF ALL to do with any survey not polling those specific items. I also fail to see what earthly relevance BRITISH politics could have to a CANADIAN site.

I also fell foul of the OS question and had to choose the one I use the most.

Also, specialities? Really? Your wondrous algorithm killed a load of the articles in some of my specialist areas.

Not impressed this time. Rare, but it happens. *Humph*.

I think it was a good idea to put a survey out there, however imperfect it might be. I answered all the questions and look forward to seeing the results.

I did not like the political question or income level question either although I took the survey.

Yes, some of the questions I don't understand the need for, either. I mean doubtless there is one and I just can't figure it out.

Excellent census!

I thought the question on political views was probably irrelevant, but definitely simplistic. A person can have political views that are to the left on social issues, but to the right on economic issues.

I wouldn't discuss my views on particular issues in a public forum, but as an example, Enoch Powell in the UK was on the far right on social issues, but was against the UK independent nuclear deterrent and fox-hunting (policies normally associated with the left).

Most of our politicians in the west (UK, USA, France, Germany etc) socialised the debts of the capitalist banking system: are they "left" or "right" politically ? !

Answered all the questions, it's very clear that a deep understanding of the user base is required to fine tune any future directional strategy.

Michael,

Just returned from a month's absence and tried to take your survey. Mid-way, I clicked to 'show all content' (Windows 7), which kicked me back to page one. After re-entering page one (less the political questions, which I declined to answer), it would not let me continue, advising me that only one survey per person was permitted. I'd be happy to complete the survey, if you can reset it for me.

I keep sending emails to the new Suite101 to ask for my copyrighted images back on the articles which were deleted.

Someone did come back to me and say the photos were with the deleted articles and that I could uplift them from there. In fact only one of each of the groups of five images per article was there and four emails sent subsequently have elicited a concrete silence. As well, the link to the deleted articles seems to have disappeared along with my images. Considering that the articles have been deleted from Suite101, I feel I should be able to publish them elsewhere, but I do need the images to do that.

Is anyone else having these problems? I wonder if the new Suite101 is so focussed on readers that writers are no longer of any consequence.
